Portico of the Church of San Miguel. San Miguel de Escalada was a monastery located in the village of the same name, near Gradefes de Rueda, province of Leon. It is located on the Camino de Santiago, 27 km from the city of Leon. Only the temple remains today from the monastery. The monastery was consecrated in the year 913 by Abbot Alfonso, who had arrived in Leon along with other monks from Cordoba. A Mozarabic work for some authors, it would be included within the so-called repopulation art, exactly when the Reconquest advanced. The Mozarabic temple was built reusing materials from previous eras, Visigothic and Roman. It has the category of National Monument since 1886. The temple's plan is basilical with three naves, separated by arches over columns, some reused, on which horseshoe arches rest. The straight exterior head houses three semi-circular ultrasemicircular-plan apses.
