In ancient Roman mythology, Mars was revered as the god of war and also an agricultural guardian, reflecting a unique combination characteristic of early Rome. He stood second in importance only to Jupiter and dominated the pantheon of military gods within the Roman army's religion. Under Greek cultural influence, Mars was identified with Ares, whose myths were reinterpreted in Roman literature and art under the name of Mars. However, the character and dignity of Mars differed fundamentally from that of his Greek counterpart, who is often treated with contempt and revulsion in Greek literature. As part of the Archaic Triad along with Jupiter and Quirinus, Mars was a significant figure in Roman mythology, with no equivalent in Greek culture. The altar dedicated to Mars in the Campus Martius, an area of Rome named after him, was supposedly built by Numa, the peace-loving semi-legendary second king of Rome. Although the center of Mars' worship initially lay outside the sacred boundary of Rome (pomerium), Augustus revived the god's importance within Roman religion by establishing the Temple of Mars Ultor in his new forum. The significance of Mars in shaping religious and cultural identity within the Roman Empire is evident from the numerous inscriptions that identify him with local deities, particularly in the Western provinces.
