The human heart symbol, as we know it today, was formed centuries ago through various theories that sought to convey emotions and love. In its simplest form, this symbol represents affection, emotional connection, and romance. One of these theories points back to ancient Greece, where the giant fennel plant called silphium was said to have been a species with impressive popularity in medicinal, culinary, and birth control purposes. Its extinction by the first century AD shows how widely it was used, as reported by ancient writers and poets. Silphium seed depictions on some artifacts appear strikingly similar to our modern heart symbol, giving credence to this theory. Another researcher proposes that ivy leaves or water lily leaf shapes could have inspired the modern design, with yet others believing it resembled body parts like breasts or buttocks. The history of this symbol reveals an evolution in its form over time, with some suggesting that it first appeared as early as the 1250s on a French romance manuscript titled 'Roman de la Poire.' This heart-like shape depicted on the book was a pine cone held upside down, but the researcher assumes that's because the lover holds his heart out to the lady, hiding its actual form. Pierre Vinken and Martin Kemp point out another historical source - writings of Galen and Aristotle, where they described a heart with three chambers and a central dent. This inspired scientists in the Middle Ages who tried to illustrate these descriptions. Anatomical drawings by Italian physicist Guido da Vigevano are just one example of how this theory led to medieval art pieces depicting love through the symbol. One significant influence is Giotto's painting, made around 1305 in Padua's Scrovegni Chapel. In his depiction of Charity giving her heart to Jesus, the same pine cone shape with an upside-down design appears again, which heavily influenced later works showcasing heart symbols. As with many human creations, the heart symbol is rooted in historical context and various interpretations.
