The relief in marble is part of the monumental tomb of Carlo Pignatelli, created by the Lombard sculptors Tommaso and Giovan Tommaso Malvito (1506-07). The winged cherub holding a burning torch is a recurring motif in sepulchral decorations because it symbolizes the transience of life and is taken from widespread iconography in Roman art. To emphasize the celebration of the deceased's family, the cherub leans against the Pignatelli family crest.
