Pushbutton Child Safety Latch for Cabinets

Pushbutton Child Safety Latch for Cabinets

thingiverse

Push-button-activated child safety latch for wooden cabinets and drawers, designed with simplicity in mind. Installation requires just one #4 screw, making it easy to set up. The mechanism stays hidden behind the cabinet door, visible only as a discreet release button. Prints quickly, with no need for supports. To release the latch, you'll first slide the button to the right against a spring's resistance. Then, press down firmly against another spring. This dual-action design is intended to be tricky enough for even the most clever toddlers to figure out. This safety feature is designed specifically for cabinets that have a front face or flange where the latch can securely attach (as shown in an accompanying illustration). If your cabinets lack a decorative trim around the door openings, you'll need to add a small screw inside the cabinet's front edge, protruding about 5mm. This provides a secure grip for the latch. The design is optimized for PETG plastic, which retains its springiness over time. However, other plastics may also work well in the short term. If you choose to use a more brittle plastic like PLA, be cautious when assembling the sliding mechanism to avoid breaking any parts (as detailed below).
