Pupienus Maximus

Pupienus Maximus, a renowned Roman coemperor, ruled alongside Balbinus for just a few months in 238. Born in 164 and dying in Rome in 238 at the remarkable age of 74, Pupienus was selected by the Senate to join forces with Balbinus against the barbarian Maximinus. Pupienus was an accomplished soldier who had reached an advanced age when he was chosen to resist the threats of Maximinus. It was agreed that Pupienus would lead the army into battle against Maximinus, while Balbinus remained in Rome to maintain order. Unfortunately, Balbinus failed miserably in this task. A revolt by the praetorians erupted, resulting in significant bloodshed and a substantial portion of the city being reduced to ashes. Upon hearing news that Maximinus had been assassinated by his own troops, Pupienus returned to Rome in triumph. Just days later, when both emperors were preparing to leave the city on an expedition - Pupienus against the Persians and Balbinus against the Goths - the praetorians seized their chance for revenge. As most of the population was attending the Capitoline games, the praetorians stormed into the palace, dragged Balbinus and Pupienus through the streets, and ultimately put them to death.
