A gourd is a type of vine plant that comes in many shapes and sizes. The most well-known variety is probably the winter squash, which is typically round with smooth skin that can be yellow, green, or even blue. In fact, some farmers are now growing winter squash in shades of red and purple. Last year, growers around the world produced a whopping 27 million tons of winter gourds - that's a lot of pumpkins! The largest producer was China, which accounted for nearly 30% of all production. But pumpkins have been grown for thousands of years. Native Americans were probably the first people to cultivate these plants as far back as 7,500 years ago. They used them for food and medicine, and they still grow pumpkins today in large quantities for commercial purposes. In fact, you can find pumpkin pie on many menus at Thanksgiving dinners in both Canada and the United States. And of course, it's hard to resist the urge to carve a jack-o'-lantern - a popular fall tradition that involves making scary faces out of real gourds. Did you know that the word "pumpkin" comes from the Greek word for large melon? The French translated this into "pompon," which eventually became known as pumpkin. But here's the thing: not all round, orange fruits are actually pumpkins! So what exactly is a pumpkin? In short, it's any kind of gourd that has smooth skin and an inside full of seeds. Of course, you can also buy canned or pre-made fillings if you're too busy to make your own. As the seasons change, so do our favorite ways to enjoy pumpkins. Last year, for example, Starbucks launched its famous Pumpkin Spice Latte in stores everywhere. Since then, pumpkin has become a hot trend in baking and cooking, with all sorts of sweet treats being sold by stores across North America. But one thing remains unchanged: the excitement of going to the local farmer's market to pick out your own pumpkin (or two, or three!). Illinois resident Sarah Frey is a famous pumpkin grower who sells over five million pumpkins each year.
