I was rummaging through some dusty archives from over two decades ago, old 2D acad files that were collecting digital dust. The ancient machine still has Solid Edge Ver 12 installed on it, a software that's roughly as old as I am. Just to scratch my nostalgic itch, I decided to recreate these vintage projects using the same outdated Solid Edge, comparing them to the modern tools at my disposal. The view on screen may not be as sleek and polished, this machine is an old IBM T41 Thinkpad with a mere 1.5 GB of ram and 32-bit XP chugging away. Using this retro setup, I was amazed to find that I could produce these models in roughly the same timeframe as I would expect with my new software and hardware. Since the days of this antiquated setup, how many tens of thousands of dollars have we or our employers spent on software and equipment, often resulting in little to no significant gain in productivity? Solid Edge was the first 3D modeling system I ever learned to master, and the sheet metal module in this vintage software still outshines many of its modern counterparts.
