Pulse Oximeter and IR Thermometer for Sickness Quantification

This is a handheld device created for rapid triage of large groups in medical emergencies or crises. The prototype notifies users if an abnormal body temperature, pulse rate, or blood oxygen concentration is detected. Body temperature was measured using the MLX90614 - Melexis Digital Plug & Play Infrared Thermometer. Pulse rates were measured with 940nm IR LEDs and BPW34 B - IR Sensitive Photodiodes. Blood oxygen concentrations were calculated from the transmittance ratio of IR and red LED's based on different absorption ratios of oxygenated hemoglobin and deoxygenated hemoglobin at 660nm vs 940nm wavelengths. The temperature was accurate to ±1.5 degrees Celsius, while pulse rates were accurate to ±5.25 beats per minute. Both areas can be improved. Blood oxygen concentrations were off by 26.8% primarily due to a disproportional gain ratio between red and IR LEDs caused by differences in optical intensity from the LED's. This could be fixed with a variable adaptable gain system. A 3D printed casing similar to Drasko's design would be great, along with improvements to the overall device.
