Pulpit

This plaster cast replicates the original marble pulpit created by Giovanni Pisano (1250-1314) in Pisa, featuring columns of porphyry and other stones, circa 1865. The original pulpit was situated at the right forward corner of the choir in Pisa's Cathedral. Following a devastating fire that ravaged the cathedral, the pulpit was disassembled in 1602. A new pulpit designed by Fancelli was installed in 1627, utilizing some of the sculpture from the old pulpit, while the rest, including narrative reliefs, were repurposed elsewhere within the cathedral. Interest in Giovanni Pisano's original design was rekindled during the nineteenth century, prompting a Pisan sculptor, Giovanni Fontana, to undertake a reconstruction in wood, completed in 1872 and showcasing the work of British sculptors who produced their own rendition by 1865, prior to Fontana's model and differing in detail from it. This cast appears to be derived from this 1865 reconstruction, with an additional copy showcased at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867. The current pulpit within Pisa's Cathedral is a reconstruction executed by Peleo Bacci in 1926, exhibiting significant differences compared to earlier renditions.
