Flat belts dominate when center distances stretch far between two shafts, but V-belts take precedence when shafts are closer together. V-belt drives boast a relatively smooth ride due to minimal slippage. They excel at transmitting ratios up to and beyond 15:1 without relying on tension pulleys. By expanding the contact area between belt and pulley, power transmission gets a significant boost.
