The well is locked within the Saint André bastion, covered by an arch to withstand the test of cannonballs. The well is dug into rock: diameter of 5.85 m and depth of 63 m. To access the water a system already used in Roman times and during the Middle Ages was installed. The same principle has also been put in place in all Vauban projects. The convict's well or squirrel wheel or squirrel cage has been reconstructed. The entire ensemble consists of a large wheel within which a man walking inside would turn the rope around the axis allowing for the lifting of two buckets. Water was poured into a basin. We can see the same model at the Mont-Louis forts, Besançon, Barraux and on the medieval site at Guédelon. This ensemble has been replaced by electric hoisting at Fort Bellegarde later (see on site).
