Puerto Rico's Lighthouse System
cults3d
This project arose as a desire to symbolically relight the Puerto Rican coasts after the earthquakes of January 6 and 7, 2020. The maritime lighting plan for Puerto Rico originally consisted of 16 lighthouses. Of these, 14 were built between 1846 and 1898; the Mayagüez and Desecheo lighthouses were never built. A second lighthouse that was not contemplated in the original plan was built on the south coast of Vieques and, after the change of sovereignty in 1898, an additional one was built in Ceiba. The lighthouse system facilitated the safe circumnavigation of the Puerto Rican archipelago, ensuring that at all times at least one guiding light was visible. Of the 15 original lighthouses; four, Aguadilla, Rincón, Guánica and Puerto Ferro in Vieques have been destroyed by earthquakes; four, Culebrita, Caja de Muertos, Mona and Cayo Cardona continue to operate but are abandoned and in danger of being lost forever; seven, Cabo Rojo, Arecibo, San Juan, Fajardo, Punta Mulas in Vieques, Maunabo and Arroyo are in good condition and can be visited. The lighthouses were designed in 3D using drawings from the Puerto Rico Historical Building Drawings Society and data from U.S. Department of the Interior. The topographic data was extracted from the USGS and rasterized on QGUIS. Culebra, Vieques, Caja de Muerto, Mona & Desecheo islands are displaced to facilitate printing.
