Gate of the Palace of the Dukes of Cadaval. Olivenza. Badajoz Olivenza is a city nestled between Spain and Portugal. Belonging to and cherished by Portugal until 1801, it has a rich civil, religious, and military architecture. The gate is typical of Portuguese Manueline Gothic (16th century) and, due to the history of Olivenza, it is a rare example outside of Portugal. Built in marble, human figures and plants stand out, with the noblest areas of the gate dedicated to armillary spheres, symbolizing Portuguese overseas conquests, the cross, and the shield of Portugal.
