sketchfab
Built between 1550 and 1560 according to the project of architect Andrés de Vandelvira, also author of Jaén Cathedral, and financed by Bishop Diego de los Cobos y Molina due to its main communication route between Úbeda and the plateau, this structure underwent significant reform in 1868. In the 1980s, a second vault was introduced under one of the existing lateral walls with the goal of stabilizing the framework and countering lateral forces exerted by massive piers, which range from 5.6 to 9.5 meters thick. Since 1998, as a result of Giribaile Dam's operational launch and construction of a new bridge, it has been out of use due to maximum water level impact. The CC-3217 highway was rerouted via the A-301 Jaén Autonomic Highway. Its current state poses a clear risk of losing the work entirely submerged under water except during periods of drought. The bridge emerged from water for the first time in history in February 2010.
