Ptolemy II Philadelphus, a king of Ptolemaic Egypt from 283 to 246 BCE, was born with the name "Ptolemaios Philádelphos" or "Ptolemy Beloved of his Sibling". He was the son of Ptolemy I Soter and Berenice, who founded the Ptolemaic kingdom. Ptolemy II was educated by Philitas of Cos, a renowned scholar. His two half-brothers, Ptolemy Keraunos and Meleager, ruled as kings in Macedonia from 281 BCE and 279 BCE respectively, but both died during the Gallic invasion between 280-279 BCE. Ptolemy II was initially married to Arsinoe I, daughter of Lysimachus, who gave birth to his legitimate children; after their divorce he wedded his full sister Arsinoe II, widow of Lysimachus. During Ptolemy's reign the material and literary magnificence of the Alexandrian court reached its peak. He fostered the Museum and Library of Alexandria and built a commemorative stele called the Great Mendes Stela.
