The Pterodactylus, named Pterodactylus (meaning 'winged finger'), is an early Jurassic creature first discovered by Georges Cuvier in 1809. Despite having dozens of specimens with complete skeletons and some even including impressions of soft tissue, there was confusion about its classification. Initially thought to be a marine creature or related to bats, it is now known as a flying reptile. The only universally accepted species is Pterodactylus antiquus, while P. longicollum, with its larger size and longer neck, may represent a separate genus.
