Pteranodon is a genus of flying reptiles that boasted some of the largest wingspans ever recorded, reaching up to 20 feet across. These incredible creatures roamed North America during the late Cretaceous period, specifically in present-day Kansas, Alabama, Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota. Fossil discoveries have unearthed over 1,200 Pteranodon specimens, many of which are remarkably well-preserved, featuring nearly complete skulls and articulated skeletons. This flying giant was a key player in the Western Interior Seaway's ecosystem. Despite its impressive size and importance to the region, Pteranodon is not technically a dinosaur due to its classification outside of the Saurischia and Ornithischia groups. Nevertheless, it often finds itself featured alongside dinosaurs in books and media, and many people mistakenly associate it with these prehistoric reptiles.
