Humans wield thermoelectric power couples to sense temperatures. A metal couple contains two dissimilar metals jointed at one end; these thermopower units can convert heat directly into voltage when heat is transferred across a material, generating an electromotive force within each leg of the unit. The device will yield different potentials depending on how well-matched are its elements and upon temperature variations occurring during usage or changes in environment conditions over time to determine operational integrity.
