Cupid and Psyche is a legendary tale that originated from Metamorphoses, written by the renowned author Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis around 2nd century AD. This ancient story revolves around the passionate love affair between Psyche and Cupid or Amor, who ultimately overcome numerous obstacles to seal their fate in a sacred marriage. Although the most comprehensive narrative comes from Apuleius's account, depictions of Eros and Psyche can be found in Greek art dating back as far as the 4th century BC. The tale's rich Neoplatonic undertones and mysterious connections to ancient cults have led to multiple interpretations, with some viewing it as an allegory, a folktale, or even a myth. Since its rediscovery during the Renaissance, Cupid and Psyche has been widely retold in poetry, drama, and opera, while also being beautifully depicted in paintings, sculptures, and even ornate wall coverings, showcasing Psyche's Roman name Anima through direct translation.
