SummaryI assembled this Retropie Portable project as a design challenge, a chance to learn more about the Raspberry Pi and create a fun hand-held gaming console powered by batteries. I prioritized good ergonomics, aiming for comfort during prolonged play sessions. To achieve this, I used an analog joystick that feels better than a D-pad, and replaced tactile membrane buttons with smooth-acting 16mm illuminated mechanical pushbuttons, which are also easier to mount in the case. The design consists of just two large pieces to print, approximately 240mm wide. Assembling the electrical parts is simple; most attach with self-tapping screws to the front half, while only the battery and charger board connect to the rear. A second USB port on the PI remains accessible for transferring roms or using an external keyboard for configuration or emulation purposes. This project uses a Teensy 2.0 for joystick function. There is a mode switch button that allows switching the teensy into keyboard emulator mode, which maps joystick movements and various button presses to specific key inputs, enabling navigation through file transfer utilities without needing a keyboard. To avoid cluttering up internal space, there are no speakers; I opted for headphones-only use. I don't recommend this build as-is, uploading it for reference purposes instead due to several aspects that would be changed upon redesign. One issue is the reliance on an original model Raspberry Pi B, whereas new designs should utilize a Pi 2. Soft power control was introduced with a switch replaced by a button, connected to the Powerboost 500 circuit. Given spatial constraints, I desoldered connector cables and directly soldered wires to the Raspberry PI's back for powering and video purposes. Between that and connecting all pushbutton leads, this design isn't suited for those not confident in soldering.
