The PSM compact self-loading pistol was designed by Tula Design Bureau engineers in 1969 as a self-defense firearm for Soviet law enforcement and military officers. Production of the pistol began at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant in 1973, using 5.45x18mm cartridges exclusively.
