The Y-carriage on the Prusa i3 accommodates three linear bearings, which are secured using u-shaped metal bolts that provide a solid foundation but come with two limitations: firstly, they can only be sourced from Prusa directly or through online retailers offering copies, and secondly, there is a risk of over-tightening and deforming the bearing. As I was assembling a new Y carriage featuring Drylin RJ4JP bearings, the potential for deformation became a pressing concern due to the fact that plastic bearings are more susceptible to warping than their metal housing counterparts. Moreover, I did not have time to wait for or afford the expensive shipping costs associated with obtaining three Y bolts from overseas. Therefore, I decided to fabricate my own carriage bearing holders, designed specifically to complement the shape and size of the Drylin bearings. Although I have not tested them with LM8UU metal bearings, they should be compatible in terms of size and shape. The design is intended to accommodate two M3x12 bolts for each bearing, secured with locking nuts or hex nuts on the opposite side. Due to their curved profile, it becomes extremely difficult to over-tighten these holders and risk deforming them. To ensure compatibility with various printer designs, I have checked the clearances on my mk3, but users with other configurations may want to test and provide feedback to inform future modifications. If necessary, I can adjust the shapes to accommodate different tolerances. UPDATE 2018-10-21: I have revised the file by incorporating a new mesh that enhances the structural integrity of the design in areas where it was previously weak, as well as correcting a mesh error that inadvertently made its way into production. Although both versions are functional, I highly recommend downloading the updated mesh file for improved performance. UPDATE 2019-04-29: I have completely re-designed this component from scratch using CAD software to ensure tighter tolerances, greater robustness, and overall better functionality. The new mk3 redo features notches compatible with LM8, Vesconite, or Drylin bearings, providing a snug fit without any play or slop.
