I'm trying to upgrade my Original Prusa MK1 3D printer by installing an authentic E3D V6 Full extruder. To house this new extruder, I initially used the Prusa MK2 extruder parts but was not satisfied with the results. I decided to improve on the design of these parts, aiming for better visibility on the bed and achieving other improvements along the way. My primary goal was to enhance visibility of the extruder components on the print bed, which led to a series of additional upgrades. The first modification involved rotating the filament feeding section 90 degrees to the left side, relocating it from its original position. This change also moved the cooling fan to the right side, clearing the front area of the extruder. To further improve access and visibility of the filament, I enhanced the filament feeding section itself. Additionally, I introduced a fan ducking system designed to efficiently cool objects while minimizing heat loss on the print bed. This upgraded extruder design fits seamlessly onto an unmodified Original MK1/MK2 X-carriage, utilizing the same motor, fans, and requiring fewer nuts, bolts, and parts compared to the original Prusa MK2 setup. Although I've only tested it on my MK1 3D printer, I believe this upgrade should also be compatible with a MK2 model. I hope you find this project inspiring and enjoyable to attempt.
