I can replace the stepper with a DC motor and encoder without taking out the old part. All I have to do is loosen a few nuts and slide it in. Two M3 screws will hold both the old blue part and the new orange one together, so belt tension won't pull it out. The orange part was printed using a DC motor on the x-axis but a stepper on the y-axis. Here's the type of motor I used: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mitsumi-448P-R-AB-phase-encoder-encodes-tacho-motor-speed-disk-DC3V-24V-5V-12V/361190538538?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%25252C222007%2526algo%2525255CSIC.MBE%2526ao%25252C1%2526asc%25252220131003132420%2526meid%252527f39ed8589274655a657d6da9a8601f9%2526pid%2525255C100005%2526rk%25252C1%2526rkt%25252C6%2526sd%25252361198872753&rt%2525253Dnc Once it's installed, here's what the system looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-_5KsAOVko
