[Prusa] Box Quick Remove Corner with Compression Spring
prusaprinters

This is a remix of the original beta quick remove corners for the Printer-Box.com Prusa Box. The original parts featured a molded spring that is intended to push the upper corner legs out just enough to clear the mounting screws on the bottom case. Unfortunately, as many people have found and the company has documented on their facebook group, the molded spring feature breaks after a few cycles.

My way of fixing this was to remove the molded spring feature, fill the void, and add a hole to accept a compression spring that approximates the original design intention.

I didn't want to waste my already printed parts so I designed a filler block. I cut out the molded spring features on my original parts using an Xacto blade and cleaned up the rectangular cavities with a needle file. Then just insert the filler, place a spring in the hole, and use the parts as normal just as Printer-Box.com describes on their website and videos.

You could choose to reprint the entire corner parts instead of using the fillers. I provide you both files so you can choose. I have tested both and they are identical in functionality.

The important part is the spring. I measured the force applied by the original molded spring feature and it averaged about 5 lbs for a displacement of 0.125 in. This gives a spring rate of about 40 lbs/in. The compression spring I chose from McMaster-Carr.com is model 9657K608, 0.25" long, 0.210" OD, and comes in a pack of 12 which provides you what you need plus a few spares. The spring fits in a hole that is 0.125" (3.175mm) deep to expose 0.125"(3.175mm) of the spring. The hole is centered where the original contact point was.

What you need

Print either the filler pieces (8 total) or the entire corner pieces (4 total)

8 springs, McMaster-Carr part number 9657K608.

Print Settings

Filler pieces: PETG, 20% infill. Orient the hole facing up, no supports.

Corner pieces: original design calls for PETG, 60% infill.
