A propfan, also known as an unducted fan (UDF) engine, is a unique aircraft engine that combines attributes of both the turboprop and turbofan. It utilizes a gas turbine to power an unshielded propeller similar to a turboprop but with numerous short, highly twisted blades like a turbofan's bypass compressor. The propfan offers the speed and performance of a turbofan while achieving the fuel efficiency of a turboprop. This engine's propulsive efficiency is enhanced by its high bypass ratio enabled by external fan blades. Even at high speeds, the curved blade design prevents shockwave formation on outer tips, maintaining efficiency levels. This results in overall propulsive efficiency gains of up to 20-25% compared to turbofans.
