Proper 18V Makita to Ryobi battery adapter

<p>Do you have Makita batteries and chargers? Do you want to use cool Ryobi tools? Don't want to spent £20/$25/€22 on Badaptor or Surebonder? Then this is for you!</p> <h3>Print instructions</h3><p>This is a proper Makita battery adapter for Ryobi tools. It can be installed/used:</p> <ol> <li><strong>Removable</strong>. Using side latches. Useful, if you own Ryobi batteries/chargers.</li> <li><strong>Semi-permanent</strong>. Using screws to fix adapter to tool. Useful, if you don't own Ryobi batteries/chargers.</li> <li><strong>Permanent</strong>. Using screws and soldering contacts directly. Useful, if you want a quick way to convert Ryobi tools to Makita.</li> </ol> <p>This adapter uses geniune Makita terminals pad (such as 643852 or 643838). If you don't have it - either purchase it, or print/make it yourself - see<br/> <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:863257">https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:863257</a></p> <p><strong>Please, carefully read assembly and usage guide below.</strong></p> <p>Source files are provided, so you can change design if you are using different size for pins/springs. Or you can just use drill to enlarge holes.</p> <p>You will need:</p> <ol><li>[2 pieces] Thin metal pin/thick needle: <ul><li>Thick needle</li> <li>Finishing pin/nail</li> <li>Syringe needle</li> <li>Unwrapped paper-clip (use wire stripper to remove silicone cover)</li></ul></li> <li>[Optional, for temporary installation only] [2 pieces] 5.55x17.46 mm compression spring or similar size: <ul><li>Use Amazon / AliExpress to purchase "spring assortment kit".</li> <li>You can also get springs from battery contacts/terminals in your old tech or local store.</li> <li>Alternatively, you can use springy foam or something similar.</li></ul></li> <li>[Optional, for temporary and semi-permanent installation] [2 pieces] Two metal strips with approximate size 9x20 mm: <ul><li>You can cut strips from flat metal sheet / fixture from your local hardware storage.</li> <li>Nickel-plated strips for welding 18650 is also an option.</li></ul></li> <li>Thick wires.</li> <li>Soldering iron and supplies.</li> <li>Small self-taping screws, or normal screws + tap.</li> <li>Hot glue.</li> <li>Instant glue (cyanoacrylate / super glue).</li></ol><p>IMPORTANT: If you want to use permanent installation - do not print entire main body. Limit print height to around 30mm (or just stop printing when shaft starts to print). Basically, you want lower part without "stick" with contacts. Also, you will NOT need top cap and contacts clamp for permanent installation.</p> <p>Supports are required for main body (only). Supports should not be used for everything else.</p> <p>Main body has a complex shape. Be aware how you are placing supports - otherwise supports may be difficult to remove.</p> <p>I used 4 tops, 3 bottom, 4 perimeters for main body.</p> <p>Side latches should be printed on its side - the one facing forward (e.g. hole's chamfer should be placed on bed). Side latches should be printed solid (no infill, increase perimeters to max).</p> <p>For everything else - use whatever orientation you prefer. Parts are saved in assembly orientation. You are expected to rotate parts on print bed.</p> <p><strong>Assembly Guide: Side Latches</strong><br/> IMPORTANT: Install side latches even if you want to use semi-permanent or permanent installation! Latches have ramp to help clamp the battery. Alternatively, you may modify main body to have latches build in.</p> <ol><li>Take pin/needle and ensure it can be inserted into side latches and main body. Use small drill to enlarge holes if necessary.</li> <li>Place side latch onto main body and insert pin/needle. IMPORTANT: do not mix up left and right latch. Hole's chamfer should be facing forward. There is a small "step" / "ramp" on the latch to guide the battery. Larger gap should be facing forward - to accept battery. Smaller gap should be on the back.</li> <li>Ensure latch can rotate freely. Cover pin's hole with glue to prevent pin from falling out. Use hot glue, as super-glue can flow down the hole and permanently attach latch to the body. Note: the pin is used only to prevent latch from falling off when battery is not installed. Pin does NOT hold battery to a tool. Once battery is installed - it will clamp latch between itself and tool. E.g. latch will hold battery directly. Therefore, the pin is not required to be very big/strong.</li> <li>Ensure springs can move freely when inserted into main body. Enlarge holes if necessary.</li> <li>Drop super-glue (or hot glue) into spring's holes on main body and insert the springs. BE CAREFUL! Ensure that glue is on the bottom. You don't want to glue springs to sides. You only want to prevent springs from falling out.</li> <li>Drop hot glue to fix springs to latches.</li> </ol><p><strong>Assembly guide: Electronics</strong></p> <ol> <li>If you do not have geniune Makita terminal pad - print and assembly this first: <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:863257">https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:863257</a> </li> </ol> <ol><li>If you are using normal screws (not self-tapping) - use tap to create threads on main body (for top cap and pad clamp).</li> <li>For temporal and semi-permanent installation: cut metal strips to size, and bend them into proper shape. Use contact's clamp as a guide and wrap metal strips around it. For permanent installation: disassemble a tool and guide wires outside. Solder extra wires if necessary.</li> <li>Guide wires through main body, and solder or crimp wires to Makita terminal pad. Pay attention to polarity. Red is positive (+). Black is negative / ground (-). See images for reference.</li> <li>[For temporal and semi-permanent installation] Cut wires to length. Ensure to leave some extra length.</li> <li>Insert terminal pad into main body. It should click.</li> <li>Insert pad clamp. Ensure it is level with terminal pad. Attach/fix it with screw. If you want permanent installation - you are done. Steps below are for temporal and semi-permanent installation.</li> <li>Solder wires to metal strips. Ensure polarity. See pictures for the reference. Basically, wire from left side should be on left side, e.g. wires should not cross. </li> <li>Place metal strips onto contacts clamp, put everything inside top cap, and screw top cap to main body.</li></ol><p><strong>Final Notes</strong><br/> Use screws and/or hot glue to fix main body to your tool if you want semi-permanent or permanent installation. Use side latches if you want temporal installation.</p> <p>Important: <strong>DO NOT</strong> try to remove adapter from a tool when battery is installed. Remove Makita battery first, then press side latches to release adapter from the tool. That is because battery will clamp latches to the tool. Attempt to remove adapter with battery installed will damage latches and/or your tool.</p> <p>Important: <strong>DO NOT use this adapter with any Ryobi chargers!!!!</strong></p> <p>Important: <strong>Makita's battery without star symbol does not have over-discharge protection in the battery</strong>. Use carefully with this adapter and Ryobi tools, as a tool can drain battery completely - making it unusable. Always check remaining charge when using batteries without star symbol.</p> <p>Depending on your printer's calibration and your Ryobi tools - you may need to adjust latches. There should be no gaps between battery-latch-tool, so when battery is inserted - the latch can not move. If you can't archieve this - just use stronger springs.</p>
