The Berliner Gipsformerei was founded in 1819 following the model of the Parisian Atelier de Moulage. Since then it has been producing high-quality casts of notable works of art from prehistory to the 20th century in traditional craftsmanship. As part of the Old Museum's opening in 1830, the Gipsformerei became officially affiliated with the Royal Museums and is thus their oldest institution. Today, the Gipsformerei is one of a few places worldwide where the historical knowledge of ancient craftsmen is still actively preserved. The Gipsformerei also has a significant collection of historic casting molds and models. This collection is at the heart of the exhibition "Nah am Leben. 200 Jahre Gipsformerei".
