project: Uranium for SLM
thingiverse
Since I purchased the amazing uranium necklace from hackerspaceshop (https://hackerspaceshop.com/collections/art-and-beauty/products/uranium), I decided to create a custom body for it. To achieve this, I designed it to be manufactured on a SLM machine, which is essentially a 3D printer specifically designed for metals. I created two versions of the design - one in the original triangular shape and another in hexagon form. Although not many individuals have access to such machines, I am sharing my design with the hope that others may find it useful or choose to modify it. Unfortunately, the print settings are somewhat limited, but I understand this is a common challenge. My design incorporates the rubber foam piece from the original uranium necklace as an insulator between the PCB and metal casing. For more information about this project, please visit my blog at https://regendrogenbogen.wordpress.com/2016/06/13/uranium/. Alternatively, you can find both designs on shapeways at: https://www.shapeways.com/product/SRAUAJBAV https://www.shapeways.com/product/TTQF8WA4Q Print Settings: Printer: SLM machine Rafts: No Supports: Yes Resolution: 0.03mm Notes: Simply print the design on your own SLM machine using aluminum as the material. Post-Printing Instructions: Removing Support Material: Use a hammer and chisel to remove the support, then use a dremel to refine the area if necessary. Next, sand and beadblast the part to achieve a smooth surface finish. Finishing Touches: Drill three holes at the bottom of the part using a 1.6mm drill bit. Cut an M2 thread in each hole. Laser Cutting: Use a laser cutter to cut a 2mm thick acrylic or equivalent material for the back panel. Assembly Instructions: Insert the marble into its cage, followed by adding an O-ring behind it to ensure optical sealing. Next, insert the original foam rubber isolator and place the PCB into its designated pocket. Finally, attach the back panel in place using three M2x4 screws with washers.
