Project Shellter - Shell 01

Project Shellter's prototype shell has been updated on October 25th with the file shell-012948.stl, exported from Sage for shell thickening experimentation. The hermit crab-inspired shell was mirrored to provide a right-handed spiral that suits the creature's abdomen curvature. It is part of an artist residency at MakerBot Industries and modeled after the Cittarium pica sea snail. The STL file can be explored using open source tools, except for converting its surface to a solid which requires a commercial tool presently. Printing instructions are available with optional sanding or tumbling recommended for smoothing surfaces. The Thing-O-Matic with Mk 7 extruder at BotFarm was used in printing, and the support settings were optimized by Matt. Jon Monaghan also contributed to the print and photos.
