The project 885 Yasen Class Submarine, codenamed "Sevrodvinsk" by NATO, is Russia's latest multirole nuclear submarine designed for fast attack and land attack missions. Construction of the first Yasen began in 1993 at the shipyard that would later bear its name, Sevrodvinsk. However, the project faced significant delays due to the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequent economic crisis in Russia, ultimately resulting in a completion date of 2011. The Yasen Class Submarine was intended to replace both the Akula (project 971) and Oscar class submarines, as well as provide Russia with an acoustic stealth capability on par with its American counterparts. Furthermore, it is designed to serve multiple roles, including land attack missions utilizing cruise missiles.
