Pripyat, an abandoned city in northern Ukraine, borders Belarus and is named after the nearby Pripyat River. Established on February 4th, 1970 as the ninth nuclear city in the Soviet Union, it served the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Officially declared a city in 1979, its population reached 49,360 before evacuation following the April 26th, 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
