Printrbot Z Hack
cults3d
Most will agree that 5/16" galvanized threaded rod is not the ideal leadscrew for a printer's z-axis, yet Printrbots still ship them as standard equipment. This adaptation is a workaround to convert the printer to an M6 threaded rod leadscrew equipped with a pair of captive nuts and a spring. The custom-printed adapter fits seamlessly into the space occupied by the 5/16" hex nut without requiring any modifications to the printer's existing framework. Upgrading to this setup boosts steps/mm to a precise 3200 (compared to 2267.7183), effectively eliminating backlash, and enables the z axis to operate smoothly with minimal friction. This modification was initially inspired by experiments with x-axis ends for the Wallace design.
