Printrbot Simple 2014 Bowden Extruder Conversion
thingiverse
Work in progress on a Bowden conversion for the 2014 Printrbot Simple model. This modification will eliminate the extruder motor's weight on the Y-axis, enabling faster, smoother prints. The UBI hot end's tip position remains unchanged, so the existing fan shroud will suffice. Approximately $12 worth of parts (Amazon) and leftover screws are required, with links provided in instructions. Contributions are welcome. An updated hot end mount version was released on 2-21-14 to fix minor fitment issues and lower the height. A successful Bowden-style print was achieved on 2-25-14, with STLs and SKP files added. The motor mount design may differ from images until new versions are printed. On 3-2-14, it was discovered that the aluminum extruder's lack of torque caused issues with Bowden support. However, some users reported successful performances. A damaged hot end led to torque problems on 4-11-14, but the mod should still work fine for others. Future updates will include braces and vents in the plate to prevent heat-induced drooping over time. Feel free to contribute to this project or provide alternative solutions. Printing instructions: Recommend using a .3mm layer height with 25% infill and no support material. Two 4mm outer thread size, 1 1/4in machine screws are needed, sourced from extra screw pile.
