Experience an OpenScad-based design for customizable, modular racks in a printable rack & pinion system for Reprap 3D printers as an alternative to belts or threaded rods. Access more information at http://www.kaosat.net/?p=1670. Be aware that this is an experimental, work-in-progress version. Edit on January 7th: The herringbone variation has been added, enabling you to set the central angle (refer to the schematic). This script can also generate straight teeth with a zero-degree angle. This updated version is optimized and faster to compile, so it's recommended for use. However, note that this version hasn't been printed yet, and full functionality is not guaranteed. Edit on January 4th: Check out a brief video of a basic "platform" movement test at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_KtJL7Gmto. For simplicity during testing, the motor is placed on top of the platform, but ideally, it should be beneath. The herringbone version is expected to be completed by next week. Remember not to use the attached STL file as it's just an example; you need to utilize the OpenScad (http://www.openscad.org/) script for generating STL files. For usage instructions, refer to information within the OpenScad file. Additionally, a nice pinion-generating script from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3575 was used in this project.
