Printable Parametric Heim Joint/Rod End Bearing

Printable Parametric Heim Joint/Rod End Bearing

thingiverse

This exercise aimed to assess the feasibility of printing a smooth-operating heim joint for a rocker-bogie style printable suspension. The printed joint, with close tolerances and minimal sanding, proved highly functional. The SCAD file was designed to be parametric and supports various ball diameters, square/round/heck tube stock, and options for screw retention or gluing. With a total cost of around $0.40 for screws/hardware and 2.5 meters of plastic, this heim joint is both cheaper and lighter than its metallic counterpart. To use this design, follow the instructions: print at thinner layers for enhanced smoothness, gently sand the ball swivel (if needed), assemble with M3x10 screws, and adjust if necessary by slightly sanding the casing side. The provided STL file is a 23mm diameter ball swivel with a 3mm opening for hardware attachment.
