Daddy, I'm so excited for my first day of 1st grade tomorrow, can you hand me the schoolbox with crayons inside? You said you got it right? Of course not, I didn't get a thing. How did you become this monster who lies to your child all the time? After years of psyching her up for school, that big day is finally here. You went shopping, but then you saw an amazing sale on hair gel and packing tape that you just couldn't resist. There was also a really good deal on a new game for your console. She tagged along, watching the excitement in your eyes, just like she sees now when she's excited about school. In a way, both are self-serving, and on the other end, slight disappointment. You get her to bed, wondering what to do next. Can you quickly find something that will hold the crayons? Who really needs a schoolbox anyway? Isn't it just another box to hold another box? You're done making excuses. That's not who you are. Is that how Kennedy felt when faced with sending humans to the moon? I think not. You've got a plan now. Design it, build it, and do it fast so your child doesn't find out about the shopping failure earlier. It's the American way! But you also need some beauty sleep. Can't you just get a box that comes fully assembled when printed? You take to your computer and start clicking away. Soon enough, you've got a design. With a few extra details to make it smooth, you print it up in no time, saving the day so your secret can be kept. UPDATE: She wakes up the next morning excited to see the school box open and shut. Back and forth it goes, each time with a satisfying click. A click that reminds her of how right the box feels in her hand. After a few more opens and shuts, another unexpected click emerges. Much like her father's promise, the hinge has broken again. Devastated and filled with regret over his design, her father returns from work with a mission. Operation HINGE-FIX (it sounds better in his head). He redesigns the box with his child looking over his shoulder. "Can I go now?" "No child, you have to learn! The printer seems to have some trouble printing the little pins and we need to beef it up and design it for the printer a bit better." "But daddy, I want to do my homework!" "How will you do your homework without proper support design in your schoolbox?" "...". A few hours later, the second version is released, and the joy of learning can continue. UPDATE: For larger clearances, choose the one that ends in "redone"!
