Print-in-place box with cam lid
prusaprinters
<p>This print-in-place box utilizes a cam follower spring to control the motion of the lid. The spring provides resistance to hold the lid closed and limits the end motion of the lid when open. The fatigue strength of 3D printed PLA was factored into the design of the spring to ensure that the spring can last many cycles. See this <a href="https://blog.engineeringpaper.xyz/designing-a-3d-printed-spring-for-fatigue-life">blog post</a> for the calculations that went into the design of the spring.</p><p>Since the spring tends to want to lift off of the print bed, I added some 0.2 mm straps to the design to hold down the spring and the cam with the initial layer. These 3 straps need to be cut away after printing to allow the lid and spring to move (see images below). If you would prefer to print without the straps, they can be easily removed since they are separate solid bodies in the model. I also printed the model with a 5 mm brim to prevent the corners of the box from lifting off of the print bed. Without the brim, the box became distorted.</p><figure class="image image-style-align-left image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://media.printables.com/media/prints/180053/rich_content/d3ab2041-5595-4beb-8539-e0464d1b54a0/image.png#%7B%22uuid%22%3A%22ae878f91-5b22-4934-a33a-fd8515cb96f1%22%2C%22w%22%3A1023%2C%22h%22%3A699%7D"></figure><figure class="image image-style-align-left image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://media.printables.com/media/prints/180053/rich_content/b871b58c-864e-4324-bae9-8f992c5a87f0/image.png#%7B%22uuid%22%3A%22b126c91c-4feb-4267-8f50-21771ab1bd9d%22%2C%22w%22%3A939%2C%22h%22%3A659%7D"></figure><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><figure class="image image-style-align-left image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://media.printables.com/media/prints/180053/rich_content/66b6fc70-7bc3-4466-a426-6809c4ffe136/image.png#%7B%22uuid%22%3A%2239b70ae3-af16-478e-aaf1-21741849bfb9%22%2C%22w%22%3A685%2C%22h%22%3A545%7D"></figure><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>If the spring is still does not move freely after cutting the straps, a flat screwdriver can be inserted between the spring and the housing and twisted to release the spring. Printing at a 0.1 mm layer height, instead of 0.2 mm, usually prevented the spring from bonding to the layers above it.</p><figure class="image image-style-align-left image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://media.printables.com/media/prints/180053/rich_content/e426f70e-adb5-46c4-804f-f8e06abda867/image.png#%7B%22uuid%22%3A%22bebce244-8a38-4309-9cf5-0ebb2d1f2c63%22%2C%22w%22%3A669%2C%22h%22%3A421%7D"></figure><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The clearance between the moving components is 0.3 mm as shown in the cross section below.
