Priam Pleads with Achilles for Hector's Body
myminifactory
During the epic siege of Troy, Patrocles, a close friend and companion of Achilles, met his untimely demise at the hands of Hector, a fierce warrior and son of King Priam of Troy. Seized by a burning desire for revenge, Achilles mercilessly struck down Hector, unleashing a torrent of grief upon the Trojan kingdom. A poignant relief sculpture captures this heart-wrenching moment in time, as King Priam, overcome with anguish, falls to his knees and implores Achilles to hand over the lifeless body of his beloved son. The relief's rhythmic arrangement of three figures on the left unfolds like a cinematic sequence, culminating in the pitiful image of Priam in supplication. The stark contrast between the towering Greek hero and the aged king serves as a poignant reminder of the vast chasm that separates these two worlds. As Achilles is finally moved by Priam's desperate plea, he relents, surrendering the lifeless body of his son to the grieving father. This magnificent marble masterpiece was crafted by Georg Christian Freund under the watchful eye of C.C. Peters, who faithfully rendered Thorvaldsen's original plaster model from 1815 (inv.no. A492).
