Gaston Monnerville, a French politician and lawyer born on January 2, 1897, was the grandson of a slave. He grew up in French Guiana and later moved to Toulouse to complete his education, becoming an exceptional student. In 1918, he became a licensed attorney and worked closely with César Campinchi, who would eventually become a prominent politician. Monnerville joined the Radical Party and was elected as Deputy from French Guiana in 1932. He served under Chautemps' government as Undersecretary of State for Colonies from 1937 to 1938.
