Prehistoric Native American Head Pot

Prehistoric Native American Head Pot

thingiverse

Long before there were artists who turned heads into pots, ancient Native American artisans were turning heads. This pot is shaped like a human head and has a beautifully crafted tattooed face. The original scan used for this model came from a prestigious online repository available at http://hampson.cast.uark.edu/ , which offers downloads of an extensive collection of prehistoric Native American pottery. The high-quality scans, meticulously detailed, can't be printed in their raw form because the scanner can only capture the exterior surface, providing a non-manifold geometry that isn't compatible with 3D printing software. I brought the scan into the renowned modeling tool 3D Coat, solidified it and transformed the exterior by hollowing out the inside using an advanced voxel editor. As a result, users interested in scholarly research on this model must take note that the external features were carefully replicated from the original scan while the interior is entirely a product of my design work. Our stimulating discussion about 3D printing technology and much more was recently featured on The 3D Printing Today podcast, accessible through various popular platforms like iTunes or Stitcher radio.
