Prefettura Di Trieste

The Palace of Government (Palace of Austrian Lieutenancy): Constructed by Viennese architect Emil Artmann, formerly Heinrich von Ferstel's student, this impressive building took shape between 1901 and 1905 on a site previously occupied by the old Government Building, erected in 1764 at Mary Teresa's behest according to Giovanni Fusconi's design. The Imperial Arsenal's offices were located there (later known as Palast der kk Statthalterei). Initially consisting of two wings, a third was added in 1825. Demolished in 1899, the structure was eventually rebuilt. Like other coastal buildings, the Prefecture rests on a thick platform, 160 cm high and supported by 3,000 concrete poles to counteract the instability of the subsoil.
