Mantis species total more than 2,400 in approximately 430 genera spread across 15 different families worldwide within temperate and tropical habitats. The largest of these groups is the family known as Mantidae, encompassing a broad array of mantises. They have distinctively shaped triangular heads boasting eyes capable of moving independently thanks to their flexibility on thin necks. While not always equipped with wings, elongated mantis bodies exhibit unique characteristics where all 430 genera possess greatly enlarged forelegs for capturing prey while folded upright. It has been noted that the most closely related groups are the Blattodea order (comprising termites and cockroaches), all located within Dictyoptera superorder. Many mistakingly group them with stick insects due to similar appearances, but they also frequently confuse them with Phasmatodea and Orthoptera, a long-legged grasshopper family or even Mantispidae in addition to those who consider unrelated raptorial insects. As opportunistic hunters in majority, a minority can be observed as being mobile in search of prey; an average lifespan is only one year in typical circumstances for these individuals with females often dying after reproduction. Those inhabiting areas of cooler climates give birth before freezing and hatching again once temperatures rise. Notably, sexual cannibalism may occasionally be witnessed when copulation occurs between adult female mantis pairs. Many historical societies believed that mantises exhibited superhuman characteristics in cultures such as Ancient Greece and Assyria. It has been an enduring common stereotype often presented through cartoons that the ladylike and sly nature is the image associated with most females. Some mantises have garnered popularity for being favored companions.
