The PPSh-41, designed by Georgy Shpagin, was a Soviet submachine gun intended to be a cost-effective, reliable, and simplified alternative to the PPD-40. Commonly known as papasha, which means daddy in Russian, this nickname is well-deserved due to its widespread use during World War II. The PPSh is a magazine-fed selective fire submachine gun utilizing an open bolt, blowback action. Constructed largely from stamped steel, it can be loaded with either a box or drum magazine and fires the 7.62x25mm Tokarev pistol round. This versatile firearm saw extensive combat use during World War II and the Korean War. The PPSh was one of the primary infantry weapons used by the Soviet Armed Forces during World War II. Approximately six million PPSh-41s were manufactured, making it a staple in Soviet military arsenals. Its influence can still be seen in the form of the Chinese Type 50, a licensed copy that remained in use with the Viet Cong as late as 1970. According to the Encyclopedia of Weapons of World War II, the PPSh was still being used by irregular militaries as recently as 2002.
