PP3D UP Plus extruder cooling duct for hot printing (ABS, PETG, PC..)
thingiverse
The stock PP3DP "wind barrier" for UP Plus, UP Plus2, and some similar printers (Afinia, etc.) is okay for PLA but fails when printing ABS due to air passing through the "closed flap." This results in warped prints. A nice upgrade, [PP3DP Up Plus redesigned wind barrier](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:253687), is available from PrintMo and works well with ABS. If you want to print PETG, PC, or Nylon, which require higher temperatures than ABS, the small axial fan cooling the extruder's throat is insufficient. For longer prints, jams can occur in the throat, leading to underextrusion. To address this issue, I redesigned the piece from scratch for a radial fan. Radial fans push more air at higher speeds and are easier to obtain (~$5 on eBay) with minimal noise increase compared to the provided fan. Even stronger fans can be obtained that can push large amounts of air, which can be slowed down using a 7809 or 7805 to maintain quiet operation while still providing ample airflow. I deliberately avoided adding mounting arms for the fan mount, instead opting to use hot glue (hotmelt, hotsnot) to secure the duct and fan. This method seals the hole between the duct and fan, provides vibration dampening, and makes it easy to remove the fan if needed. The exit hole of the duct projects air at a 30°-45° angle upwards, ensuring it does not interfere with printing. However, this part will not aid in printing PLA or other materials that require part cooling; for those materials, use the original PP3DP design and open the door to cool the part. UPDATE 2018-09-23: V2 has been uploaded, offering a more sturdy design. Changes include increased height where the blower is attached, a place to screw the blower in (eliminating the need for glue), and thicker pads with screw holes (originally designed to break after a year of operation due to vibration).
