The potto (Perodicticus potto) is a small, agile species of primate that closely resembles lorises and lemurs. It inhabits the lush rainforest canopies of tropical Africa, where it spends most of its time roaming in search of food. The potto's diet consists mainly of fruit, but it also feeds on tree gums that are too tough for many other animals to digest; around 10% of its diet is made up of insects. As the potto moves through the forest canopy, it is usually very quiet and stealthy, using its powerful senses to detect any potential threats. However, despite being a small species, the potto has few natural predators due to its elevated habitat - large carnivorous mammals are unable to reach the forest canopy, and birds of prey typically hunt during the day when the potto is least active. If threatened, the potto can defend itself using its specially adapted neck vertebrae. These vertebrae are sharpened and elongated, allowing the potto to butt at an opponent with great force. This unique defense mechanism gives the potto a significant advantage over potential predators in its environment. This specimen of the potto is part of the Lapworth's Humphreys Collection, which has been meticulously digitized using advanced 3D scanning technology. The Artec Spider 3D scanner was used to create highly accurate digital models of the specimen, allowing researchers to study its anatomy and behavior in unprecedented detail. The digitization process was carried out by Rachel Kruft Welton, a skilled technician with extensive experience in 3D scanning and modeling.
