The Khitan Empire, officially known as the Great Liao, is a historical empire that existed in East Asia from 907 to 1125. Founded by Abaoji, the Khagan of the Khitan people, this empire was the first to control all of Manchuria. At its peak, the Liao dynasty ruled over Mongolia, parts of the Russian Far East, northern Korea, and northern China proper. Abaoji, a skilled leader, founded the Liao dynasty around the time of Tang China's collapse. His leadership laid the foundation for a thriving empire that lasted for nearly two centuries. The Liao dynasty was known for its impressive cultural achievements, including stunning statuary and artifacts that are now housed in museums worldwide. However, the Liao dynasty came to an abrupt end when it was conquered by the Jurchen people of the Jin dynasty in 1125. Emperor Tianzuo of Liao was captured, marking a significant turning point in Khitan history. But even as the empire crumbled, the remnants of the Khitan people continued to thrive under the leadership of Yelü Dashi. Yelü Dashi's determination and vision led to the establishment of the Qara Khitai, also known as the Western Liao dynasty, which ruled over parts of Central Asia for nearly a century. Though eventually conquered by the Mongols, the Qara Khitai left an indelible mark on the region's history. Despite its significant cultural achievements, the influence of the Liao Khitan culture remains shrouded in mystery. Artistic and theatrical traditions that flourished during this period continue to inspire new generations of artists and performers. Researchers continue to study the artifacts and statuary from this era, seeking answers about the empire's impact on subsequent developments.
