Pottery/Clay Rolling Stamps and Handle

Use these rollers to add texture and patterns to clay projects. You can roll them by hand or print the handle to make them easier to move. The handle needs two sets of 20mm long M4 pan-head bolts and nuts (or you can use round-head bolts; 1 inch round-head 8-32 bolts and nuts might work, too).

(New versions of rollers April 6, 2022: Adjusted patterns to conceal beginning/end seam, so roller print appears continuous. Eliminated flimsy vertical supports; changed support to base offset 0.3 mm from roller.)

Print rollers standing on end, no supports necessary. This may seem weird, but it preserves roller patterns and saves you the pain of removing supports. Each roller is paired with a base to keep it upright during printing. The base is offset 0.3 mm from the roller, to help you peel it away at the end of the print.

The handle prints normally: no supports necessary.

To assemble the roller, drop an M4 nut in each of the slots at the end of the arms, then thread the 20mm M4 bolt through each arm and nut. The head of the bolt should be inside the arms, leaving the end of the bolt on the outside. Thread the knobs of the bolt ends.

Rollers include Bubbles, a spray of big and little spheres; Amoeba, a primordial collection of tiny critters; Worms, no explanation necessary; Fish, schooling in formation; and Voronoi, cellular patterns resembling stonework.

Want more rollers? Here are six more patterns, including Crosses, Hearts, Donuts, Peppermills, Ribbons and Teardrops.

(I designed these in Rhino 3D using its lovely Flow Along Surface command.)

I've printed all of these in PETG. I gave the rollers to a friend who is making clay cups, vases and bowls. The group photo shown here is an earlier batch I designed and printed for him. I don't have a good photo of the latest crop of rollers.
