A vase is essentially an open container crafted from various materials such as ceramics, glass, non-rusting metals like aluminum, brass, bronze, or stainless steel. Even wood has been used in vase production by utilizing tree species that naturally resist decay, such as teak, or by applying a protective coating to conventional wood or plastic. Vases often feature decorative elements and are commonly utilized for holding cut flowers. They come in diverse sizes to accommodate the type of flower being displayed or supported. Typically, vases share a similar shape profile. The base may be bulbous, flat, carinate, or have another unique form. The body forms the main portion of the piece. Some vases possess a shoulder where the body curves inward, a neck that adds height, and a lip where the vase flares out at the top. Certain designs also incorporate handles. Throughout history, various styles and types of vases have been developed across different regions and time periods, such as Chinese ceramics and Native American pottery. In ancient Greece, vase-painting was a traditional term referring to fine painted pottery often featuring scenes from Greek mythology. These pieces may be referred to as vases regardless of their shape; most were used for holding or serving liquids and would more accurately be called cups, jugs, etc. In 2003, Grayson Perry won the Turner Prize for his ceramics, which typically took the form of a vase.
